Is the Creator giving us signs, speaking to us through natural and man-made events? Jesus mourned over the inhabitants of Jerusalem because they weren’t paying attention to what was in front of their eyes. The leaders and the people of his day both failed to understand “the things that make for peace” or recognize “the time of [their] visitation.” Because of this they were not prepared for the judgment that was soon to come upon them. They interpreted the signs wrong!
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” —Luke 19:41-44 ESV
He implies here that “the things that make for peace” were now hidden from their eyes. A religious and cultural blindness had set in and only a “few” would take heed. It was their “time” for a “visitation” but they did not know how to respond in a way that would change things.
The kind of peace that is experienced today between the United States and the Indian Tribes is like a truce. It is a cessation of hostilities imposed upon the Tribes. The issues haven’t been resolved, the “war” isn’t really over, there still exists a sort of “demilitarized” zone between them. A “peacekeeping force” was put in place long ago by the superior power–but there has been no real peace, only a cessation of military violence.
Let’s pray that the Maker of Life will open our eyes and give us the insight we need to respond correctly to what this Nation is experiencing. With God, it is often the “still small voice” that needs to be heeded. I think we might be surprised at what God is communicating. We need, eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to us today.
Thank you for listening.
